As promised, Hakim Draper, Director of Licensing – Radio, follows up the NAB Radio Show with The Draper Report. This is his first-hand report of industry trends and happenings at the show!
What a great Radio Show! From the moment you hit the floor at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta you could feel that this was going to be a great NAB Radio Show. There was energy and excitement from the opening reception all the way through the last day.
This year delivered so much more than lip service. It was a great mix of new faces and old friends with exciting events and sessions that focused on radio’s ability to embrace the future and build on the legacy. On Tuesday night, Warner/Chappell Production Music kicked off the end of the first day with the Marketplace Mixer. It was great to see so many people interacting throughout the exhibit hall and shaking off the business of the day! Drinks were imbibed, food was eaten and good times were certainly had.
The excitement is not without merit as we learned at the Agencies Speak session. When asked about Radio’s place in the current environment Amplifi US EVP, Managing Partner, Local Video and Audio Investment, Jennifer Hungerbuhler remarked that while the landscape has never been more complex Radio has been “remarkably stable throughout the process”. All three of the panelists went on to talk about Radio’s strong positioning with its ability to fully integrate campaigns at a moment’s notice. The supporting data has continued to prove out a better return for both the advertisers and the stations.
The other focus at the Radio Show this year was the innovation that is happening within radio. Simply put, data is king. We heard a lot from Mike Hibbison, The Home Depot’s Vice President of Integrated Media, that the power of Radio and theater of the mind continues to be effective at a high level.
And finally, it was an honor to see our clients win big at the Marconi Awards. Congratulations to all the folks at WTOP Washington, DC (Major Market Station of the year), KRMG Tulsa, OK (Medium Market Station of the year) & WFAN New York, NY (Sports Station of the year).
Once again, it was pleasure to see and chat with everyone and I look forward to next year when the conference is held in Nashville, TN. In the meantime, browse our Radio page for our latest playlists, new releases and imaging elements.
